Title: S is for Short Cut (Vancouver)
(from the series “Art that says Hello”)

Year: 2003

Medium: Public outreach intervention in coffee shop (with free ephemera) as part of an ongoing series of performance interventions conducted on behalf of the fictional company, Art Courtesy Services

Description: This participatory artwork was located in a coffee-house in Vancouver’s Lower East Side. A poster on a bulletin board explained that people could take a free postcard that showed a map to a short cut that they were invited to explore. It also invited them to share their own short cuts by writing directions on note-cards and connecting them to a location on the map, using available pins and coloured string. As the postcard text says, “When each of us makes and uses short cuts we redraw the city.”
