Title: Critical Tragedy

Year: 1996

Medium: Installation with wood platform, shoes, ashes, dry-erase board, marker, easel, mounted posters.

Description: This tableau seems to present the aftermath of a lecture interrupted by spontaneous combustion. On the floor between an easel and a blank whiteboard is a pair of shoes partially covered by a small mound of ashes. Perched on the easel and lying on the floor at the front of the stage are mounted posters from the band ‘Rage Against the Machine’. Each of these posters reproduces press photographs of Vietnamese monks immolating themselves in protest during the Vietnam war; graphically the posters create an association between the band and the content of those photographs. Lying on the stage nearby is an unused marker.
